FLOATING ICE DAMPENS WAVES
2024
Floating Ice Dampens Waves is an album that was composed using heavily processed field recordings and traditional instruments. The main inspiration for the work being nordic marine weather, from brutal storms in the arcitc sea to a cool summer breeze in the archipelago, it is an attempt to create musical equivalents for a body of water reacting to different weather conditions and changing seasons . The album was performed as a live soundscape at the closing ceremony of Matleena Jänis' exhibition Mökillä in May 2025.
The title of the work is borrowed from a 2019 research article by physicist Bruce Sutherland, who found out sea ice and ocean waves push and pull apart “like an accordion”.
Composed, recorded and mixed by Jaakko Metsäpelto
Mastered by Iiro Inkilä / Studio II
